To kick off a day celebrating DIY practices, XPACE hosts a Zine Making Workshop, Listening Party and Launch for their new Library Project from 12 – 3pm.

XPACE’s Library Project includes THE CURATED LIBRARY- Texts curated bi-monthly to coincide with exhibitions, ZINE LIBRARY- Zines, comics, bookworks, anthologies from local and international artists and the BOOGIE WOOGIE MIX TAPE LIBRARY- Curatorial project by Sarah Butterill devoted to cassette tape music and sounds. Participants borrow a tape (each home-made cassette tape has a specific theme) and a walkman of their choice and engage with their surroundings. From 3 – 5pm Zine Dream presents a Panel Discussion featuring artists who are involved in publishing – from DIY self-publishing to running an experimental record label to publishing an internationally distributed art magazine. Moderated by Shannon Gerard, join us in a discussion spanning a variety of approaches and experiences to art publishing featuring:

Jamie Q makes paintings, drawings, prints, zines, sculptures, and other stuff, sometimes solo and sometimes collaboratively. Jamie wrote a thesis about the politics and aesthetics of the do-it-yourself ethic, and the social potential of art objects and DIY distribution strategies.

Antonio Lennert and Symon Oliver are the current directors of the OCAD U Student Press. THE CARL WAGAN BOOKMOBILE is a traveling campervan of cosmic proportions. It is a gallery, printshop, studio, library, reading room, classroom, and community project—all contained within a 1988 VW Westfalia. CARL WAGAN promotes active engagement with book-based cultural activity such as self-publishing, zine-making, screen-printing, and bookbinding. Subtitled “The Spaceship of the Imagination,” CARL is partly a loving homage to the innovation of astronomer Carl Sagan whose passion for dreaming continues to inspire generations of thinkers. CARL WAGAN is an experiment in radical pedagogy—bringing the strategies, materials, ideas and dialogues of independent publishing to a wide variety of audiences.

Deep Madder Monthly is written as a form of catharsis for Alexander Arvelo McQuaig and Christopher Hubbarde and any other overly sensitive citizens prone to feelings of social desperation and existential dread. It is a journal of alienation meant to serve as a sort of therapist’s couch, summoning conversations of a deeply confessional and introspective nature, the sharing of which we hope will produce a sense of comforting intimacy for readers who can relate.

EAU CLAIRE is the collaboration work of Lee Mesazaros and Amy Egerdeen. Felix Kalmenson is a Toronto based artist who completed his Bachelor of Architecture and Urban Studies at the University of Toronto. Felix works in a variety of media including; film, photography, installation, and collage, within public space, as well as, in the gallery setting. Peter Kalyniuk is a multi-media artist from Toronto who has self-publishied many books of comics and drawings since the early nineties and recently started screenprinting. He also composes and records instrumental keyboard music in his spare time.
The Toronto Zine Library is run by a collective of zine readers, zine makers and librarians who are looking to make zines more accessible in Toronto. We believe that zines are still an important medium of communication, and that they should be cherished, protected, and promoted. Our aim to do this through our public collection of zines, conducting related workshops at our physical library and abroad, and by holding events that promote zines as a method of open communication and free expression.

Sabrina Scott is a professional illustrator and amateur herbalist living on the third floor of an old Victorian house in Canada. As a youngster she braved the varied wildernesses of Colorado, Ottawa, California, Montana, and Florida before settling in Toronto as her beloved home. From hanging out in lagoons with herons to having ducks as pets, Sabrina has had many an adventure and loves to explore the wilderness.In her work she explores indigenous spiritualities, magic, ethnobotany, technology, patterns, textures, folklore,fauna, and everything in between. Sarah Creagen and Heidi Cho will be sharing a table and sitting side by side all day. Heidi is a self-taught artist who draws about feelings, gay shame and immigrant guilt. She will be bringing some mini comics, called ‘just enough.’ Sarah is a whiney Cancerian. Her comics are true stories for other mixies, about fam, runner-ups and bugs.
Sarah Pinder‘s first book, Cutting Room, is forthcoming with Coach House Books in Fall 2012. A zine maker of over a decade, her work has been shortlisted for the Expozine Small Press Awards, and sold in Montreal’s Distroboto art vending machines. You can find out what she’s up to next here:

Sasha Foster is a Toronto based artist who completed her Bachelor of Design in Illustration at the OCADU. Static Zine is run by editor Jessica Lewis and managing editors Aviva Cohen and Melody Lamb out of Toronto, Ontario. The DIY magazine is a collective of storytellers from all over the city, whether they are writers, illustrators, photographers and/or musicians who are tasked with taking a different theme into their own context with each issue. The zine is made in a cut-and-paste style, with the contributor getting the option to do the layout for their own page at Static Headquarters, so everyone comes together to work on it. It’s a fun thing to do together and give back to the city.
Susie Zmyslowski is a 5th year OCADU student studying Drawing & Painting and Illustration. I work in digital and traditional media, and am most interested in fashion illustration. I will be bringing prints of various illustrations that I have recently done, as well as handmade jewlery including charm necklaces and earrings. I will also be contributing several zines on the subject of my travels, my most recent one being to Portugal.
